ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - A 33-year-old Chugiak man has been accused of raping and strangling a 15-year-old girl at a known and isolated fishing and partying spot in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough.

Ralph Barenz II has been charged with sexual assault and assault, and he was being held without bail at the Mat-Su Pretrial Facility. An arraignment hearing was planned Wednesday in Palmer, the Alaska Dispatch News reported (

Online court records don’t list an attorney for Barenz.

The assault occurred in the Jim Creek area near the Knik River by Butte. The child-abuse investigation unit was called at 4:45 a.m. Tuesday to report to sexual assault. It wasn’t immediately clear when the alleged assault took place, and few other details have been released.

The Jim Creek area is popular for fishing during the day but is a notorious party spot at night. The area is only accessible by driving a rough road to reach it.

The Dispatch News reports Barenz was convicted in 2007 for driving under the influence and a year later for disorderly conduct. Both convictions were in Anchorage courts.

He also faces felony drug charges from earlier this summer in Palmer in a case that is still moving through the legal system.
