MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) - A Long Island man has pleaded guilty for a hit-run that killed a 13-year-old girl with Down syndrome.

Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice says Michael Elardo of Syosset (sy-AH’-seht) pleaded guilty Wednesday to leaving the scene of a fatal incident without reporting.

Rice said the defendant will be sentenced on Oct. 14 to up to four years in prison.

Bryanna Soplin was struck on June 15 as she crossed Hempstead (HEHM’-stehd) Turnpike in Levittown. Her parents said she slipped out of the house in the middle of the night, apparently hoping to visit her grandparents.
