The Transportation Department canceled its plans to cut highway funding payments to states and communities after Congress passed a temporary funding bill last week, The Hill reported.

Though Secretary Anthony Foxx told state transportation officials he would have preferred a longer funding package for the Highway Trust Fund, cuts won’t be necessary for the time being.

However, Mr. Foxx warned the program would be at risk within a couple of months if Congress doesn’t move to provide funding beyond the current May 2015 extension.

“While I am pleased that Congress took action to avoid the immediate insolvency of the Highway Account this summer, I am disappointed that they merely kicked the can down the road again,” Mr. Foxx wrote, The Hill reported.
