DETROIT (AP) - Community groups and public agencies are planning to host a couple hundred children at an event to mark the launch of the Detroit Youth Kayak Group and completion of the Detroit Heritage River Water Trail map update.

The event will be held Friday morning at the Delray Fishing and Boat Launch in southwestern Detroit and serves as the culmination of an effort started in 2009.

In addition to a ceremony, group members and children are expected to go out in canoes on the river and travel the trail.

One of the organizers, Minnesota-based Wilderness Inquiry, plans to bring its Canoemobile. The program features six Voyageur canoes and aims to deal with what it calls “nature deficit disorder, summer learning loss and the achievement gap.”
