NEWBERN, Ala. (AP) - A 20-year-old woman accused of dumping her newborn baby in a trash bin outside a house in west Alabama has been charged with attempted murder.

WBRC-TV reported Wednesday that Stephanie Coates is being held on $250,000. District Attorney Michael Jackson has said Coates put her newborn baby in a trash bin and told an older relative, who found the baby and called police.

Jackson has said Coates cut the baby’s umbilical cord with a razor and was hospitalized along with the baby. Jackson has said her charges will be upgraded to capital murder if the baby doesn’t survive.

Perry County sheriff’s spokesman Billy Jones tells the Tuscaloosa News the baby boy is in good condition at Children’s of Alabama in Birmingham.

It’s unclear if Coates has an attorney.
