ALTOONA, Iowa (AP) - Authorities say a couple face child endangerment charges after a toddler they were babysitting in central Iowa was bit by a dog.

Altoona police say 38-year-old Scott Kimmel and 22-year-old Lea Kimmel contacted authorities Monday night. They reported a 1-year-old girl they were babysitting fell onto a wire dog cage and cut her cheek.

Officers say the child’s face was bleeding severely when they arrived. She was taken to a hospital.

Des Moines television station KCCI reports (https://bit.ly/1vQo3Tb ) officials determined the girl was bit by a dog, and authorities later found a pit bull mix in the apartment.

Online records show Scott Kimmel and Lea Kimmel each face a charge of child endangerment causing serious injury. Court records do not list attorneys.

The dog will be euthanized.
