DUNDEE, Scotland (AP) - Scottish club Dundee United says it is “monitoring” Australian football’s A-League amid speculation that it is in negotiations for a takeover of Newcastle Jets.

United, which is third in the Scottish Premiership, released a statement on Wednesday saying its chairman Stephen Thompson recently visited Australia to meet clubs and league representatives “as part of a wide-ranging fact finding mission.”

The club says Thompson’s trip “provided a worthwhile insight into a league that is progressing rapidly,” adding that Australia is one of a number of countries United is examining.

United won its only Scottish league title in 1983 and reached the semifinals of the European Cup in 1984.
