CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Maintaining shellfish populations is the focus of a worldwide conference getting underway in Charleston.

The International Conference on Shellfish Restoration opens on Wednesday and continues through Saturday.

A release from the South Carolina Sea Grant Consortium says the conference is focusing on three main areas. They include restoring coastal areas so they can again support shellfish, enhancing shellfish populations that already exist and protecting water quality so shellfish can flourish.

The international conference was first held on Hilton Head Island in 1996.
