FARMINGTON, Utah (AP) - A 26-year-old Layton woman has pleaded not guilty to charges she exposed her baby daughter to methadone, leading to the child’s death.

The Standard-Examiner reports (https://bit.ly/1BzGFtJ) Courtney Nicole Howell entered her plea Wednesday to one count of exposing a child to a controlled substance.

Prosecutors say Howell in March reported her 17-month old daughter was not breathing.

The girl was taken to a hospital, where she died.

An autopsy revealed the infant died from methadone poisoning.

Police say Howell had a prescription for methadone and traces of it were found in baby bottles.

Howell’s lawyer Todd Utzinger did not return immediately messages Wednesday.

If convicted, Howell could serve up to five years in prison.
