LEWISTON, Maine (AP) - A Maine gynecologist has surrendered his medical license after prescribing medical marijuana to male patients.

The Sun Journal (https://bit.ly/1slW8VY ) reported Thursday that Dr. Keng-cheong Leong was limited to in-office gynecology after a separate disciplinary action three years ago.

Officials contend Leong issued medical marijuana certificates to 49 male patients, failed to perform appropriate examinations and failed to create appropriate medical records. They say he also saw patients at “unorthodox” sites instead of an office.

Leong told the board that issuing marijuana certificates was consistent with his “inclination for holistic treatment” and that it was better to treat with marijuana than narcotics.

Leong, who’s been licensed in Maine since 1973, signed the consent decree this week ending his right to practice medicine rather than be subject to a board hearing.
