CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) - In a departure from previous methods of nominating school officials, Southern Illinois University will not use an outside search firm to hire a new chancellor, according to President Randy Dunn.

Instead, an internal committee will be formed to conduct a search, saving the school as much as $120,000, he said.

“I’m working on the assumption, based upon the sense of the board that I have at this stage, that you’re comfortable moving forward doing this in-house, staffing it with people out of the system office,” Dunn said at a Wednesday board meeting.

Dunn also has taken on the Carbondale campus’ chancellor duties since the unexpected death of interim chancellor Paul Sarvela last month. The search for a new chancellor should take about six months, he said.

“In essence, we’re already in month one,” Dunn said. “To not try to give it a slap dash rush job, we think that is going to be necessary to undertake a full and complete search to find the optimal candidate.”

Dunn is responsible for appointing the chancellor search committee members, the Southern Illinoisan (https://bit.ly/1zU7W6h ) reported.

The committee will conduct interviews, discussions and other work to ultimately narrow down the pool of candidates to three applicants, whose names will be released to faculty and staff so they can partake in the selection process, he said.

The school has employed six different chancellors since 2001.
