SAN ANTONIO (AP) - A former South Texas convenience store owner faces up to 20 years in prison for running a $275,000 food stamps scheme.
Aijaz Aslam remains free on bond pending sentencing next year. Prosecutors in San Antonio say the 55-year-old Aslam on Thursday pleaded guilty to wire fraud.
Investigators say Aslam formerly owned J.M. Food Mart in Seguin (suh-GEEN’). The businessman from late 2009 until mid-2013 sold ineligible items including alcohol and tobacco to people who received food stamp benefits electronically, via Lone Star Cards.
Prosecutors say Aslam also traded those government benefits for cash, while generally charging customers up to double the amount of money received.
