HOUSTON (AP) - A Houston woman has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for failing to stop after fatally striking a bicyclist with her truck.
Jurors on Thursday decided the punishment for 35-year-old Margaret Meyer after about 40 minutes of deliberation. She was convicted Wednesday of failing to stop and render aid in the December 2013 death of 24-year-old Chelsea Norman.
Authorities say Norman had left work at Whole Foods when she was struck by Mayer, who drove away. Norman later died from brain swelling.
Mayer testified that she thought she had struck a tree and not a person.
