BLOOMFIELD, N.M. (AP) - Authorities say a Bloomfield man accused of fatally stabbing his wife now is in custody.
San Juan County Sheriff’s officials say 56-year-old Steve Barela is being held on suspicion of first-degree murder along with resisting, evading or obstructing an officer by refusing to bring his vehicle to a stop.
Authorities received a 911 call late Thursday from a man who said he had just killed his wife.
Sheriff’s deputies went to Barela’s home and found Evelyn Barela dead with multiple lacerations to her body.
They say Steve Barela told a Bloomfield gas station clerk about the stabbing and he was later arrested after a police chase.
He’s being held at San Juan County Adult Detention Center on $500,000 cash bond.
It was unclear Friday if he has a lawyer yet.
