San Diego State’s Donny Hageman missed a 34-yard field goal with 24 seconds remaining, allowing Navy to escape with a 17-16 victory over the Aztecs in the Poinsettia Bowl on Tuesday.

Chris Swain rushed for 72 yards, Ryan Williams-Jenkins gained 67 yards and Noah Copeland rushed for 63 yards for the Midshipmen (8-5), who won their second consecutive bowl game.

Quarterback Keenan Reynolds completed three of seven passes for 17 yards and rushed 19 times for nine yards and two touchdowns, gaining one yard with 7:35 remaining in the first quarter and six yards with 8:28 left in the third quarter.

Austin Grebe put Navy ahead of the Aztecs (7-6) with a 24-yard field goal with 1:24 left, but San Diego State drove 63 yards over eight plays, including a 32-yard reception by Eric Judge, that set up Hageman’s field goal attempt.

Hageman had made three previous field goal attempts, converting from 43, 37 and then 30 yards, before his attempt from the left hash mark was narrowly pushed wide right.

Quinn Kaehler completed 11 of 27 passes for 141 yards and two interceptions for San Diego State, which was playing the game in its home stadium. Donnell Pumphrey, who set the Aztecs’ single-season rushing record earlier in the game, ran for 112 yards and a touchdown.

The teams combined for four turnovers in the fourth quarter, with Navy fumbling it away twice. Williams-Jenkins ran 28 yards on a pitch with 3:38 remaining to help set up Grebe’s go-ahead field goal.

Navy’s victory was restitution for its loss in the 2010 edition of the game — one which San Diego State won, 35-14.
