SPANAWAY, Wash. (AP) - One person is dead after spraying Pierce County deputies with pepper spray during a traffic stop in Spanaway on Saturday.

KIRO 7 News reports (https://bit.ly/1eHpZAC) one deputy fired his gun and hit the person, who was wanted on multiple outstanding warrants, during a struggle.

The deadly confrontation began with a routine traffic stop. When the deputies ran background checks, they found one of the people in the car was wanted on warrants.

As the deputies attempted to arrest the suspect, they were hit with pepper spray. One of the officers fired his gun.

Authorities say the person died at the scene, while the other vehicle occupants were detained for questioning.

The age or name of the dead suspect was not immediately available.
