BAYONNE, N.J. (AP) - A northern New Jersey man was arrested on marijuana possession charges after his car collided with a private vehicle being driven by an off-duty Port Authority of New York and New Jersey police officer.

The minor accident occurred around 2 p.m. Friday in Bayonne.

Port Authority police spokesman Joe Pentangelo says the officer, Tom Czekajlo, and 33-year-old Bayonne resident Nelson Alcaide had left their vehicles and were exchanging information when Alcaide suddenly ran off while clutching a plastic bag. A short chase ensued before Czekajlo caught Alcaide.

Pentangelo said 9 small plastic bags apparently containing marijuana were found in the bag Alcaide was carrying. He also had more than $5,000 in cash, which Pentangelo said tested positive for narcotics residue.

Czekajlo was treated for a left knee injury.
