NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. (AP) - Authorities say a 68-year-old man has been killed by police officers in Edgefield County after leading them on a chase.

Investigators said police in North Augusta tried to stop Earnest Satterwhite Sr. to see if he was driving drunk on Sunday night. But when the officers turned on their blue lights, authorities say Satterwhite sped away going north on U.S. Highway 25.

The chase went into Edgefield County, where shots were fired and the suspect was hit and died.

The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the death. The name of any officers who fired shots or the agency they worked for has not been released.
