COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A co-founder of a nonprofit that aims to help more women get elected in South Carolina is running for secretary of state.

Charleston nonprofit consultant Ginny Deerin announced her candidacy Saturday at the Democrats’ statewide issues conference in Greenville.

Deerin says she’s running to cut fees the secretary of state’s office charges nonprofits and businesses, reduce its regulations, and cut its budget.

Deerin managed Charleston Mayor Joe Riley’s last re-election campaign, but this is her first run for office. She co-founded Project XX last year to assist female candidates. In 1996, she founded Wings for Kids, an after-school nonprofit that teaches students social and emotional skills and provides homework assistance.

Deerin is the first Democrat to announce a challenge to Republican Mark Hammond, who is seeking a fourth term.
