SAN ANTONIO (AP) - Investigators are trying to determine what led to the death of a South Texas soldier who was found in a stairwell outside his barracks.

Officials at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston on Monday identified the soldier as 28-year-old Spec. Ian Patrick Morgan. No hometown was immediately provided for Morgan, who was discovered early Sunday and pronounced dead at San Antonio Military Medical Center.

An autopsy has been ordered. Military criminal investigators have taken over the case, saying the nature and circumstances of the death are being investigated. No additional information was released Monday.

Morgan was assigned to U.S. Army North headquarters, 56th Signal Co.
