LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - A Las Cruces man has pleaded no contest to involuntary manslaughter after originally being charged with murder in the 2010 shooting death of his sister who was visiting from Montana.

The Las Cruces Sun-News (https://bit.ly/1iWCyMo ) reports that 44-year-old Richard Scott Zikmanis could be sentenced to up to 18 months in prison as a result of his plea Monday.

However, defense attorney Stacey Ward plans to ask District Judge Fernando Macias for a sentence of only probation.

Prosecutors say 43-year-old Denise Zikmanis of Fort Benton, Mont., was fatally wounded when her brother’s semi-automatic handgun accidentally discharged while they were drinking and arguing at his home on March 27, 2010.
