LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say a Lake Elsinore man who was being mauled by pit bulls was rescued by a good Samaritan who smashed his van through a chain-link fence to scare the dogs away.

The Press-Enterprise of Riverside (https://bit.ly/1goFp03) reports the mauling took place Tuesday in the victim’s yard. The person who came to his rescue was believed to be a neighbor.

Riverside County Animal Services officials believe the man may have been trying to break up a dog fight when the animals turned on him.

They say one of the dogs belonged to the victim and another was his roommate’s.

In all, officials impounded four adult dogs and two puppies. The roommate’s animal was to be euthanized.

The victim was hospitalized and his name and condition were not immediately available.
