DALLAS (AP) - Police say a Dallas firefighter was killed after a motorist lost control of his vehicle on an icy highway overpass and struck the 14-year veteran as he assisted at an earlier auto wreck.

Investigators said Wednesday that 40-year-old William Scott Tanksley was thrown from the overpass and fell to Interstate 20 below. Authorities had announced the death of the married father of three a day earlier but not an explanation for why he fell.

The motorist came upon the earlier accident on the overpass Monday evening and attempted to stop. But the slick roadway caused the driver to lose control and strike Tanksley. No charges have been filed and police say the death will be referred to a grand jury for review.
