SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - A proposal to overhaul the selection of university governing boards has failed in the House.
The measure would have established independent nominating commissions to recommend candidates to the governor for appointment to boards of regents at state universities, the New Mexico Military Institute and the School for the Blind and Visually Impaired.
The governor currently appoints regents.
Democratic Rep. Jeff Steinborn of Las Cruces said the proposal would ensure the “best of the best” become regents.
The measure failed Friday on a 32-27 vote. Republican opponents viewed the measure as eroding GOP Gov. Susana Martinez’s power.
Constitutional amendments need approval of a majority of all members of a legislative chamber - 36 votes in the House.
Voters decide proposed constitutional amendments if they’re approved by lawmakers.
