VILLARREAL, Spain (AP) - A smoke bomb with effects similar to tear gas was thrown onto the pitch of El Madrigal Stadium and forced the game between host Villarreal and Celta Vigo to be temporarily stopped on Saturday.

The smoke bomb was thrown in the 87th minute, causing fans to stream to the exits and players to ask for water as it apparently irritated their eyesight. A public announcer asked the spectators to evacuate.

Celta was winning 1-0 after Fabian Orellana scored in the 83rd when the game was interrupted.

The game was restarted after around a 20-minute wait for the smoke to clear. Some fans returned for the final minutes and saw Celta win 2-0 after Manuel “Nolito” Agudo scored off a free kick in the 90th.

TV replays could not locate the person who threw the device.

“I don’t know who it was, but these things can’t happen in our house,” Villarreal midfielder Bruno Soriano said. “I hope the person is found.”

The loss left Villarreal in fifth place, four points from the final Champions League spot.
