TEMPLE, Texas (AP) - A 2-year-old Central Texas girl is dead after a dog her family was watching for a friend attacked her.

Temple police say Je’vaeh Mayes died Monday afternoon at Scott & White Memorial Hospital after the late-morning attack.

Police Cpl. Christopher Wilcox says the pit bull mix was being kept in the backyard of the child’s family’s home when the girl went out into the yard without her parents’ knowledge.

The dog attacked, fatally injuring the girl. Wilcox says animal control officers have quarantined the dog.
