KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) - A 58-year-old man has been sentenced to 22 years, six months to 40 years in prison for second-degree murder in the death of his 56-year-old estranged wife, whose body was found inside her southwestern Michigan apartment.

Clinton E. Smith pleaded guilty Jan. 17 in Kalamazoo County Circuit Court, avoiding the possibility of a first-degree murder conviction and a mandatory life sentence.

Judge Gary C. Giguere Jr. sentenced him Tuesday.

Police say Delores Mae Smith’s body was found Sept. 12 in Portage after police responded to a request to check her welfare. She didn’t show up for work that day.
