PHOENIX (AP) - The Arizona House has passed a bill that would allow residents of the retirement community of Sun City to drive their golf cars on a roadway.
Republican Rep. Debbie Lesko of Peoria wrote House Bill 2027 to apply only to retirement communities in Maricopa County. She says the bill was prompted by a sheriff’s deputy who wrote tickets to five Sun City residents last summer for driving along the paved shoulder of a roadway.
Residents who use their carts for everyday travel reacted by moving into the regular traffic lane, causing a safety issue.
The bill clarifies a state law allowing residents to drive on the shoulder along the community’s wide streets.
The bill was approved unanimously Tuesday and will now go to the Senate for consideration.
