LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) - Maria Alvarez and Channise Lewis scored 15 points apiece to lead Miami Country Day to a 65-51 victory over Seffner Christian in the Florida Class 3A girls basketball championship game.

It was the first girls basketball championship for Miami Country Day (27-3) after losing in last year’s title game.

Miami Country Day stormed out to an early lead Wednesday in the first period behind the sharp shooting of Alvarez, who hit four 3-pointers in the period and helped the Spartans go ahead by as many as 15 points.

Seffner Christian (26-6) hung around behind the efforts of Peyton Walker (24 points and 11 rebounds) and Sabrina Whiting (16 points). Several times in the third quarter, Seffner Christian closed the gap to eight points but could never get closer and trailed 53-41 after three periods.

Miami Country Day opened the fourth period on a 9-0 run to extend its lead to 62-41 with less than five minutes remaining in the game and end any hopes of a comeback.
