NEWBURY, N.H. (AP) - New Hampshire firefighters battled a late-night fire that ripped through an antique furniture and gift shop near the base of the Mount Sunapee Resort ski area.

Fire officials were called to the “Contessa and the Cowboy” shop at the Mount Sunapee traffic circle at about 11 p.m. Saturday.

No injuries were reported, but much of the old structure was destroyed.

WMUR-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1af0L0p ) that the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Fire officials say the fire spread rapidly because of the age of the structure. Holes had to be cut in the roof so firefighters could extinguish flames in the attic.

Officials say the relatively higher temperature Saturday night allowed them to move quickly without their equipment and the pavement underfoot icing up.
