LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - State election officials are working to develop an emergency rule to incorporate an opinion by the Arkansas attorney general on voter identification requirements for casting absentee ballots.
The state Board of Election Commissioners on Wednesday told its staff to write a rule that stipulates that absentee voters who don’t have adequate proof of identity won’t be allowed to provide documents later to ensure their ballots will be counted.
The commission’s staff is to meet with members of the secretary of state’s staff to write the rule. The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports (https://is.gd/H1aOLu ) the board wants to consider the measure at its next meeting on Feb. 28.
The voter ID law passed last year allows voters to cast provisional ballots if they don’t have an ID when they go to the polls.
