SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A caucus of Utah House Republicans has decided to throw its support behind a measure to move the state prison.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports (https://bit.ly/1fg4v3l ) the House Republican caucus voted Thursday in favor of the idea. Their decision doesn’t move the measure forward, but it gives it an influential group of supporters.
Republicans vastly outnumber Democrats in the House, which has yet to vote on the measure. The Senate would need to approve it also.
State officials have long considered moving the state prison from its location in Draper to free up the real estate for development.
Earlier this month, a committee of lawmakers and community leaders voted to recommend the move.
An outside consulting firm estimates the net cost to move the prison would be around $100 million.
