DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - A former Newton doctor has pleaded guilty to charges of health care fraud and illegally distributing a prescription drug resulting in death.

Lafayette Twyner Jr., who is 64, agreed to a plea deal on Friday. If a judge agrees with it, Twyner will face five years in prison and three years of confinement at home or in community corrections.

Federal prosecutors accused Twyner in an October 2013 indictment of prescribing drugs in a manner that caused dependence, addiction, and in one case, death. The indictment also alleges insurance companies were billed for prescriptions and services that were not for a legitimate medical purpose.

Twyner surrendered his registration to prescribe controlled substances in April 2011 and surrendered his license to practice medicine in 2012.
