FRISCO, N.C. (AP) - Officials with the N.C. Department of Transportation say off-road vehicles will be able to drive on the beach to detour around culvert repairs on N.C. 12.

NCDOT plans to close the highway at 7 p.m. Feb. 28 and reopen it by 6 a.m. March 3. Crews are replacing a culvert just south of Timber Trail.

Off-road vehicles will be allowed to access Seashore beaches at Ramp 45 near Lighthouse Road and the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in Buxton. They may also access through Ramp 49 near Billy Mitchell Airport in Frisco to detour through the park for a distance of approximately 8.6 miles. The route includes paved and over-sand routes. The sand route will be open to four-wheel-drive vehicles only.

NCDOT said the pipe needed replacement because it was deteriorating.
