PHOENIX (AP) - Bond is set at $270,000 for an ex-convict accused of fatally stabbing a man outside a Mesa apartment complex.

David Anthony Stokes had his initial appearance Monday in Maricopa County Superior Court.

He was arrested early Sunday on suspicion of second-degree murder.

Mesa police say Stokes told investigators that he and the victim had both been drinking Saturday and the other man slapped Stokes‘ girlfriend, which angered him.

The victim died at the scene and police say he had three separate stab wounds including one near his neck.

Police haven’t released the name of the victim yet.

Stokes has a March 3 status conference and March 5 preliminary hearing, but doesn’t have a lawyer yet.

Authorities say Stokes has an extensive criminal history and served time in an Arizona prison.
