MADERA, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say they arrested a Michigan man trying to smuggle marijuana into a California women’s prison while visiting his new wife, who is an inmate.

Erica Stuart of the Madera County Sheriff’s Office said Monday that William Leroy Waltz, a 41-year-old convicted sex offender, is also wanted for leaving Michigan and for failing to report his current address.

On Sunday, Waltz was attempting to visit his wife at the Central California Women’s Facility in Chowchilla, when correctional officers found the marijuana, but Stuart says she didn’t know how much Waltz tried to smuggle or how. Waltz and his wife married in July.

Waltz was booked on suspicion of failing to register as a sex offender and attempting to smuggle marijuana into prison, both felonies. His bail is set at $25,000.
