MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) - Morgantown police say an officer shot and killed a dog after it charged him.

Police are advising residents to avoid a second dog that also charged the officer and then fled. Police say this dog appeared to be a brown mixed breed weighing about 100 pounds.

The officer was responding to reports on Sunday that the dogs were eating a dead deer near Dorsey Knob Park.

Police say the officer found the dogs and was waiting for the Monongalia County dog warden to arrive when they charged him. He fired four shots at one dog and both animals fled. The dog that was shot died after running about 20 yards.

Police say anyone who sees the second dog should contact police or the county dog warden.
