ELIZABETH, N.J. (AP) - Numerous charges have been filed against a northern New Jersey man who allegedly abducted and sexually assaulted a woman.

Acting Union County Prosecutor Grace Park said 42-year-old Joseph Defreitas of East Rutherford faces carjacking, kidnapping, robbery and weapons charges, along with two counts of aggravated sexual assault. He was served with the charges Monday at Morris County Jail, where he’s being held in an unrelated carjacking case.

His bail on the Union County charges has been set at $650,000.

Union County authorities said Defreitas attacked the woman in the early morning hours of Christmas Eve in 2012. She had just arrived at a Linden department store where she worked and was getting out of her car when a masked man armed with a gun forced her back into the vehicle.

The man then began driving the car and initially told the woman to direct him to an ATM and to take out money for him. But he instead drove her to an unknown location and forced her to perform a sexual act before driving her back to the department store parking lot, where he threatened to kill her before fleeing the scene.

Besides the two cases in New Jersey, prosecutors said Defreitas also faces numerous charges in connection with a series of robberies and home invasions in Connecticut.
