EDGEWATER, Md. (AP) - Anne Arundel County Police say a woman walking in an Edgewater neighborhood was struck and killed by a car that drifted down a hill behind her.

Police say 73-year-old Lee Sheila Mahoney was walking on Chesapeake Drive about 3:20 p.m. Monday when a parked car began to drift down the hill. Officers say the car struck Mahoney from behind and stopped on top of her.

Authorities say the car’s owner, 23-year-old David Garman of Edgewater, saw his car moving and ran out of a house to get it.

Officers say Garman, who did not know Mahoney was under the car, backed up the vehicle.

Mahoney was pronounced dead at Anne Arundel Medical Center.

Police say a preliminary investigation shows that Garman failed to park the car properly.
