NEW YORK (AP) - Authorities say a New York City man charged with burglarizing homes was arrested with a box containing the cremated ashes of a woman’s dead mother.

Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said Tuesday Randolph Ardila was arrested after an officer saw the box in a car witnesses identified leaving the robbed house. He says Ardila had a screwdriver to forcibly open house doors.

He’s been charged with burglary and possession of stolen property.

Seventy-year-old Mary Scarpati says she noticed that the gold box inscribed with her mom’s name and date of death was among the camera, jewelry and other items stolen Friday night from her living room.

She says she was devastated when she saw it was missing but is relieved authorities returned it.

The 28-year-old Ardila’s attorney didn’t return a request for comment.
