MIAMI (AP) - Several groups that back Florida’s constitutional prohibition on same-sex marriage have filed court papers opposing a lawsuit that challenges that ban.

Florida Family Action Inc., Florida Democratic League and the PULSE civil rights group said in the papers filed Tuesday that the lawsuit filed by six gay couples should be dismissed by a judge. The groups say the lawsuit could improperly invalidate millions of votes cast in 2008 to approve the same-sex marriage amendment to the state constitution.

The lawsuit filed by the gay couples in Miami-Dade County Circuit Court contends the prohibition is an unconstitutional violation of guarantees of equal treatment and due process. Gay marriage bans have been struck down by judges in other states.

Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi’s office has responded officially to the lawsuit.
