ALAMOGORDO, N.M. (AP) - A New Mexico man is facing charges after Alamogordo police say he fatally shot another man who was beating his girlfriend.

Albert Whitehead, 21, was charged Monday with an open count of murder in the death of Eric Gillock, 36, of Hurst, Texas, the Alamogordo Daily News reports (https://goo.gl/RLUOPm).

Authorities say Whitehead saw Gillock beating his girlfriend outside an Alamogordo home late Sunday, grabbed a .22 rifle and ordered Gillock to stop hurting the woman.

Alamogordo Police Sgt. Roger Schoolcraft said during their confrontation, Gillock charged at Whitehead, who then shot Gillock in the chest.

Gillock reportedly said, “You want some of this?” before allegedly charging at Whitehead, according to court records.

“He said he didn’t even realize he had pulled the trigger,” Schoolcraft said, referring to Whitehead.

Whitehead told police Gillock continued into the residence and fought with Whitehead before going limp.

Whitehead’s roommate came to his aid and reported hitting Gillock before the victim “suddenly ‘went limp,’” according to court records.

Schoolcraft said Whitehead was attempting to revive Gillock when police arrived.

“The suspect was actually doing CPR on the victim when the police drove up,” Schoolcraft said. “He realized he wasn’t breathing.”

According to court records, Gillock was pronounced dead at Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center early Monday.

Whitehead was released on an unsecured bond.

It was not known if Whitehead had an attorney.
