FAIRBANKS, Alaska (AP) - Prosecutors say an investigation of former Alaska State Trooper captain on charges of sexual abuse of a minor was touched off by the discovery of a text message on the teen’s cellphone.

Investigators say the girl’s mother on Thursday found evidence of abuse on the cellphone and confronted 75-ytear-old Warren Tanner. Prosecutors say he acknowledged the abuse and said he would seek counseling but would not turn himself in.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner (https://bit.ly/1hPeVZG) reports Tanner was arrested Friday.

He is charged with six felony counts and is being held without bail at Fairbanks Correctional Center. Tanner said at arraignment Saturday he planned to hire an attorney.

Prosecutors say the charges cover 2003 to 2011 when the girl was 3 or 4 years old until she was 11.
