SAN DIEGO (AP) - Sony Electronics will slash 400 jobs in San Diego this year as part of a restructuring of the Japanese conglomerate that will see 5,000 layoffs worldwide.

U-T San Diego says (https://bit.ly/OCSF8z ) Sony is undertaking a major makeover as it sees its TV and computer market shares shrink.

San Diego is headquarters for Sony‘s electronics business in North America and employs roughly 2,000 workers before the layoffs.

The company also said it would close 20 of its 31 Sony retail stores in the U.S. But the Sony store in San Diego’s Fashion Valley and the Sony retail outlet at the Westfield mall in University City will remain open.

About 1,000 jobs will be cut in the U.S.
