RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Richmond authorities say an inmate who was mistakenly released is back in custody.
Maj. Jerry Baldwin of the Richmond Sheriff’s Office says Evan Kelsey surrendered at the city jail Thursday afternoon after sheriff’s deputies discovered where he had been staying.
Kelsey was convicted Jan. 28 on attempted murder and firearms charges. He had been free on a $5,000 personal recognizance bond pending the trial.
Col. Roy Witham of the sheriff’s office tells the Richmond Times-Dispatch (https://bit.ly/1bOfTCA ) that records received by the city jail said Kelsey’s bond wasn’t addressed. He says jail staff believed that meant the court didn’t intend for Kelsey to be held pending sentencing. A judge ordered Kelsey’s arrest on Tuesday after the mistake was discovered
