DENVER (AP) - Authorities say a 25-year-old man is facing a first-degree murder charge in the death of his girlfriend’s 2-year-old son at an east Denver motel.

The Denver Post reports (https://bit.ly/1k5Dwcp ) Quintin Stanley told detectives he was watching the boy and his 3-year-old sister Friday night and early Saturday while their mother was at work. Stanley says he was giving the boy a bath when he fell face first in the tub, which held about 1 or 2 inches of water.

But police are questioning what they say are discrepancies in Stanley’s timeline of events, and note that water was coming out of the boy’s mouth during attempts to revive him at the hospital.

The medical examiner has not released the boy’s name.
