MIDDLEBURY, Ind. (AP) - Indiana police are looking for a convicted murderer who escaped from a Michigan prison and was later spotted in northern Indiana.

Authorities say 40-year-old Michael David Elliot escaped Sunday from Ionia Correctional Facility in mid-Michigan, then might have abducted a woman using a knife or box cutter who escaped late Sunday when they stopped for gas at a convenience store near the Elkhart County town of Middlebury.

Indiana State Police Sgt. Trent Smith said police around the state have been notified about Elliot’s escape and the vehicle he was last seen driving.

Smith says while officers are looking for Elliot, he doesn’t believe Elliot is sticking around the area near the Indiana-Michigan state line. Police don’t know what direction he went after leaving the gas station.
