POST, Texas (AP) - One of four people helping the driver of a small truck that skidded off a slick West Texas highway has died and the three others injured when an 18-wheeler slipped off the same road and struck the group.

Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman Bryan Witt says icy roads are to blame.

A Garza County sheriff’s deputy also was injured after responding to the scene earlier Tuesday for another tractor-trailer that jackknifed in the same area and slid off U.S. 84.

Two deputies saw the small truck slide off the road near the jackknifed rig. One deputy and three bystanders who stopped went to help.

The four were struck by the 18-wheeler when it skidded into the center median near Post.

The injured were taken to a Lubbock hospital.
