SPRINGFIELD, Ore. (AP) - Springfield police say a grand jury will review a fatal shooting that followed a traffic accident last week.

The Eugene Register-Guard reports (https://is.gd/UnXK5B ) that 53-year-old David Paul Crofut was shot after the accident last Thursday.

The other driver, 34-year-old Gerald Roy Strebendt, has not been charged with a crime. His attorney, Mike Arnold of Eugene, says his client faced a death threat and “called 911 but was forced to act in self-defense before help arrived.”

Springfield police Sgt. David Lewis says that an emergency dispatcher was still on the line when Crofut was killed.

Police say Strebendt’s gun was the only weapon seized in their investigation.

The Register-Guard says Strebendt is a former professional mixed martial arts fighter and Marine Corps sniper who owns a gym in downtown Springfield.
