PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A Rhode Island judge has ordered a Providence man held without bail in connection with the city’s second homicide of the year.

Twenty-year-old Saul Rivera was arraigned Monday in Providence District Court on charges including first-degree murder, domestic assault and illegally carrying a firearm. He is expected to return to court in May.

Police say Rivera fatally shot 24-year-old Derreck Almanzar early Friday morning at the corner of Chalkstone and River avenues.

Authorities say the series of events began when Rivera assaulted his ex-girlfriend and she called friends for help. Police say Almanzar and two other men picked up the woman and drove her away, but Rivera tracked them down and opened fire on their car.

Rivera didn’t enter a plea Monday.
